CHASING OPPORTUNITY

Unlike her sister, who walked out of the womb and straight into law school, Sue Mills didn’t know what career she wanted. Instead, she tried everything.

While studying a commerce degree to appease her parents, Sue moonlighted in mining, finance, retail and legal. In her attempt to figure out what she was good at, she enjoyed nearly every job she tried. But it was while doing a favour for a friend, that she made the mistake that would keep her hired for the next decade.

Answering phones at a medical financial services firm was not thrilling work, so in a moment of boredom she picked up a file and decided to take initiative. She did everything completely wrong. In that moment, Sue’s manager could have simply disciplined her – or worse, fired her – but instead, decided to give her more training. Sue had found a company keen to hire talent – not just staff – and she stayed there 10 years.

Since having her family, Sue has started her own business, Sassy Marketing. She says she has now discovered finding sales and marketing strategies for small businesses is her calling. In this podcast, she explains to Elise Stevens the importance of having a keen eye for opportunity.
